Digitizing Vinyl and Cassettes: Preserving Your Analog Collection

A practical guide to digitizing vinyl and cassettes: the gear chain, recording to WAV, archiving as FLAC, and cleaning up without ruining the sound.

Somewhere in your home there's a crate of records or a shoebox of cassettes holding music that exists nowhere else. A local band's demo. A limited pressing that never made it to CD, let alone streaming. A mixtape someone made you that matters more than any album on it. Every play wears the groove or the tape a little more, and neither medium is getting younger. Digitizing vinyl and cassettes is how you stop the clock: capture the sound as it is today, keep the original safely on the shelf, and carry a perfect copy everywhere.

The good news is that none of this requires a studio. The gear is modest, the software is free, and the process is more patience than wizardry. Here's the whole path, from groove to file.

Why digitizing vinyl and tape is worth your time

Three honest reasons:

  • Preservation. Vinyl wears a little with every play. Cassettes have it worse: tape sheds oxide, binders break down, pressure pads dry out and fall off. A digital capture freezes today's condition forever: the record can keep aging on the shelf while the file doesn't.
  • Portability. Once it's a file, that unreissued LP plays in the car, on your phone, at your desk, anywhere your library goes.
  • Insurance. Media gets scratched, warped, eaten, and lost in house moves. A file can be copied. And once you've spent an evening capturing a rare record in real time, you'll want that file in more than one place; see backing up your collection before a dead drive undoes the work.

The signal chain, from analog to file

Every setup, cheap or fancy, is the same four links: source → correct signal level → analog-to-digital converter → computer. Get each link right and the rest is just pressing record.

For records

A turntable's cartridge puts out a tiny, deliberately skewed signal. It needs a phono preamp (also called a phono stage) to boost it to line level and apply RIAA equalization, the standard correction curve every record is cut with. Without it, your capture will be quiet, thin, and wrong.

You may already have one. Many turntables have a phono stage built in (look for a PHONO/LINE switch), and most integrated amps and receivers have a PHONO input that does the job. From there, a line-level output goes into your converter.

The converter itself is easiest as a basic USB audio interface with line inputs: the small two-channel boxes from companies like Focusrite or Behringer are everywhere and more than good enough. Your computer's built-in line-in can work, but it's often the noisiest link in the chain. USB turntables roll the phono stage and converter into one box; convenient, usually serviceable, rarely the best-sounding option, but a fine way to start.

For cassettes

Simpler, in a way: a tape deck already outputs line level. Run its RCA line outputs straight into the interface. Use the line out rather than the headphone jack if you can: it bypasses the headphone amp and its volume knob.

With tape, the deck is the sound quality. Clean the heads with isopropyl alcohol on a swab before you start (a dirty head dulls everything) and if a tape sounds muffled in one direction, the deck's azimuth alignment may not match the machine that recorded it. A well-maintained deck matters more than any other purchase in this project.

Record to WAV, archive as FLAC

For the capture itself, free software is genuinely fine: Audacity is the usual choice and does everything you need.

Two settings decisions, then you're done fiddling:

  • Levels. Set your input gain so the loudest peaks land around −6 to −12 dBFS, well below the top. Digital clipping is permanent and sounds awful, and analog sources throw surprise peaks. Headroom costs nothing.
  • Format. Record at 24-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz. The extra bit depth is cheap insurance for conservative levels. Resist the pull of 96 or 192 kHz: it won't hurt, but at those rates you're mostly capturing surface noise and tape hiss in higher fidelity. The medium's own noise floor is the ceiling here, not your converter.

Record whole sides in one pass: flip, record, repeat. Save the raw capture as WAV while you work, then archive it as FLAC: identical audio, roughly half the size, proper tagging. It's the same archival logic as ripping your CDs, just with a slower, more analog first step.

Keep the raw, untouched capture. Storage is cheap; a second real-time recording session is not.

Clean up gently, or not at all

This is where good transfers get ruined. The tools are tempting: de-clickers for vinyl pops, noise reduction for tape hiss, normalizers for levels. Used lightly, they help. Used enthusiastically, they smear transients and leave that unmistakable swirly, underwater artifact that's far more distracting than the noise ever was.

A sane approach:

  1. De-click vinyl sparingly. Repair the big pops individually rather than running an aggressive pass over the whole side.
  2. Be very careful with hiss. Gentle broadband noise reduction on tape can work; heavy settings destroy the music's air. When in doubt, leave the hiss: it's the honest sound of the medium.
  3. Normalize peaks, don't compress. Bringing the whole file up so its loudest peak sits near full scale is fine. Dynamic compression is not restoration.
  4. Always process a copy. The raw capture stays untouched, forever.

A faint hiss and the occasional pop say "record." A lisping, warbling de-noised file says "software." Choose the record.

Split, tag, and label everything

A 45-minute file called side-a.wav is a future mystery. Split each side into tracks (Audacity's labels make this quick) and then tag properly: artist, album, track titles and numbers, year, cover art. It's worth noting the provenance in a comment tag too, something like Transferred from original 1979 pressing. Your future self will thank you. What to realistically expect

You are capturing your copy of the record, in the condition it's in, wear, pops, and all. A transfer can't outdo a proper commercial remaster made from the master tapes, so if an album is available as a good digital release, buying it is usually the better use of an evening. Spend your transfer time on the things that exist nowhere else. That's where this hobby pays off.

And it is slow, pleasantly so. Capture happens in real time: a C90 cassette takes ninety minutes before you've edited a thing. Do a side a night. Put the kettle on. You're listening to your collection more closely than you have in years, which turns out to be half the reward.

When the first transfer is done, it's just an ordinary FLAC like any other in your library. Open the player and drag it in: it plays right in your browser, nothing uploaded anywhere, which feels about right for music that spent forty years never touching the internet.
