Every drive you own is going to die. Not might, will. The only unknowns are the date and whether it takes anything irreplaceable with it. If your music collection lives on exactly one disk right now, you're not storing it; you're lending it to hardware with a countdown you can't see. Learning to back up your music collection properly is the least glamorous part of this hobby and, the day it matters, the only part that matters.
Think about what's actually on that drive. The winter you spent ripping every CD you own. Out-of-print albums that never made it to streaming. Bandcamp purchases from artists who've since vanished from the internet. Vinyl you digitized side by side, in real time. Years of careful tagging and cover art. None of it can be re-downloaded from anywhere, because the "anywhere" is the drive itself.
Backup people condensed decades of hard lessons into three numbers, and they hold up:
Each number closes a specific hole. Two copies on the same drive is one copy: the drive is the failure unit. Two drives in the same house still share a fate: fire, flood, theft, and lightning don't check folder names. The offsite copy is the one that survives the bad day you're not imagining vividly enough.
The comforting part: for a music library, 3-2-1 is cheap. Even a large FLAC collection fits on ordinary external drives that cost less than a couple of the albums on them.
Spinning hard drives die of mechanics: bearings, heads, motors. SSDs die of electronics and firmware, often with no symptoms at all: fine at bedtime, unrecognized at breakfast. Some drives grumble beforehand in their SMART diagnostics; plenty don't. Planning around warning signs is planning around luck.
Two popular non-backups deserve calling out, because they feel like backups right up until they aren't:
RAID is not backup. A mirrored drive faithfully mirrors your mistakes: delete an album, corrupt a file, catch ransomware, and the mirror applies it instantly to both copies. RAID protects uptime, not history.
Sync is not backup. Sync services propagate whatever happens. Fat-finger a folder deletion and watch it replicate beautifully to every device you own.
What you want is a copy that lags, one that isn't automatically infected by whatever just went wrong. A backup you update deliberately, on your schedule, is a time machine. A mirror is just a second witness to the accident.
Local drives are the natural fit for music people: fast to restore, fully private, a one-time cost, and entirely yours: no terms of service, no company between you and your files. That independence is kind of the whole point of owning your music in the first place. Their weakness is geography (they tend to live where you live) and discipline (a backup drive only works if you actually plug it in on schedule).
Cloud storage inverts the trade. It's offsite by definition and can run automatically, genuinely valuable. The honest costs: a subscription that never ends, a first upload measured in days for a big lossless library, a provider whose pricing, terms, and existence can change, and your collection sitting on someone else's computers. A cloud provider is a business, not a promise.
The sane answer isn't tribal: it's the split. Local drives for your two nearby copies, plus one offsite copy: cloud if the convenience wins you over, or simply a third drive that lives at work or a relative's house and swaps with a home drive every few months. That rotation, boring as it sounds, satisfies 3-2-1 completely with zero subscriptions.
Here's the failure mode nobody budgets for: backups that don't restore. The drive that sat in a drawer for three years and won't mount. The copy job that silently skipped a folder in 2023. Files that developed bit rot (quiet, creeping corruption) and were then dutifully backed up in their corrupted state.
An unverified backup is a hope with a cable attached. Verification turns it back into a backup, and FLAC users get a head start here: every FLAC file carries a built-in MD5 checksum of its own audio, written at encoding time. Run flac -t across your library and every file gets decoded and checked against its fingerprint: any corruption anywhere in the audio, ever, gets caught by name. It's a self-audit your collection can perform on demand, and one of the format's most underrated features.

If your backups hold lossless masters (FLAC rips of your CDs, lossless purchases, needle-drop archives) you hold the source. Every derivative you'll ever want can be regenerated from it forever: Opus for the phone, MP3 for the car, whatever format wins the next decade. Back up only lossy copies and you've preserved the compromise instead of the music, and that door doesn't open backwards.
It's also simply easier to protect a library that's in order. A consistently organized collection (clean folder structure, coherent tags) is one you can copy, diff, and verify without archaeology.
So here's the takeaway, and it's deliberately unambitious: tonight, one external drive, one full copy. Not the perfect NAS-and-encrypted-cloud architecture you'll research for a month: one honest copy that exists. You can climb to full 3-2-1 next weekend. Collections aren't lost to insufficiently elegant systems; they're lost to single drives and someday.
