How to Rip Your CD Collection to FLAC (The Right Way)

How to rip CDs to FLAC properly: secure ripping with EAC, dBpoweramp or XLD, AccurateRip verification, drive offsets, and tagging as you go.

Somewhere in your house is a shelf, a crate, or a garage box of CDs you haven't touched in years, and it's quietly one of the most valuable music assets you own. Every disc on it is a lossless master copy that you actually own, no subscription attached. The project of turning that shelf into files is worth doing exactly once, properly, because the difference between a careless rip and a correct one is permanent, and re-ripping four hundred discs is nobody's idea of a good month.

So here's how to rip CDs to FLAC the right way: verified, tagged, and finished forever.

Why FLAC, and why "secure"

Two decisions define this whole project, so let's make them explicitly.

FLAC as the target format is the easy one. It's lossless, a bit-perfect copy of the disc at roughly half the size of raw audio, openly documented, supported nearly everywhere, and it carries proper tags and embedded artwork. Rip to FLAC once and you can generate MP3s, AACs, or whatever the next decade invents from it forever, never touching the disc again. One non-decision inside that decision: FLAC's compression level (0–8) only trades encoding time against file size. Every level decodes to identical audio. Level 8 squeezes out a few extra percent; the default of 5 is fine. There is no quality setting to agonize over; that's the point of lossless.

Secure ripping is the part most people skip, and shouldn't. A CD drive doing ordinary playback is allowed to guess: when it hits a scratch or a smudge and can't read a sector cleanly, it interpolates something plausible and moves on, because a live listener prefers a papered-over glitch to a pause. Fine for playback, quietly poisonous for archiving, because those guesses become permanent errors in your "perfect" copy, often on exactly the discs that matter (the old, loved, scuffed ones).

A secure ripper refuses to guess. It reads each sector multiple times, compares the results, re-reads anything inconsistent, and (crucially) tells you when it couldn't get a clean read, instead of silently shipping a defect.

The difference between a secure rip and a fast rip isn't speed of ripping: it's whether you ever have to wonder, years later, if that click was on the recording.

Your toolkit

Three programs have earned the community's trust over two decades:

  • Exact Audio Copy (EAC): Windows, free. The old workhorse. Famously fiddly to configure the first time, bulletproof afterwards. Endless setup guides exist.
  • dBpoweramp: Windows and Mac, paid. The convenient one: secure ripping with excellent metadata lookup and far less setup friction. If the license fee saves you an evening of configuration, it's money well spent for a big collection.
  • XLD: Mac, free. The standard answer on macOS: secure ripping, AccurateRip, clean FLAC output.

(On Linux, whipper carries the EAC philosophy over the fence.) Any of these gets you the same destination; pick by platform and patience.

Your drive matters less than you'd fear (most any drive rips accurately with the right settings) but two settings matter a lot:

Drive offset. Nearly every CD drive starts reading a fixed number of samples early or late, a small, perfectly consistent factory quirk. Your ripper corrects it with a per-model offset value from a community database; the software usually detects and sets this for you the first time. Configure it once and your rips align sample-for-sample with everyone else's, which is what makes the next part work.

Test & copy / secure mode. Make sure it's on. That's the whole "secure" part.

AccurateRip: the killer feature

Here's the mechanism that elevates this from "careful" to "verified." AccurateRip is a database of checksums from millions of rips made by other people, worldwide. When you rip a track, your ripper computes a checksum of the audio and compares it against everyone else's rips of the same pressing.

Think about what a match means: your drive, in your house, produced the exact same bits as dozens of strangers' drives reading their copies of the disc. Errors are random (scratches differ, dust differs, drives differ) so identical results across independent rips is overwhelming evidence that every one of them is perfect. A match isn't "probably fine." It's about the strongest verification you can get without the original master tape.

When a track doesn't match, the ripper falls back to brute care: re-reading the stubborn sectors dozens of times until reads agree, and logging honestly if they never do. Obscure discs sometimes just aren't in the database. A clean secure rip with no errors reported is still a good rip; you simply hold the certificate yourself. Keep the log file your ripper produces alongside the album: it's the permanent record that the rip was verified, and future-you (or anyone you pass the collection to) will be glad it exists.

Tag as you go, seriously

A hard-won law of collection-building: metadata debt compounds. A perfectly ripped album labelled Track01.flac by Unknown Artist is a small chore today and an archaeology project in five years, multiplied by every disc you postponed.

The good news is that ripping time is the cheapest moment to tag, because you're holding the physical disc and the software does most of the work:

  • Accept the metadata lookup, but read it. Your ripper queries online databases and usually nails artist, album, year, and track titles. Skim before accepting: community databases contain typos, and multi-disc sets and classical releases are where they hide.
  • Fetch cover art now, at a decent resolution, and embed it. Chasing artwork for three hundred already-ripped albums is misery.
  • Pick one convention and never deviate: artist name format, how multi-disc sets are numbered, a folder scheme like Artist/Year - Album/. Boring consistency is what makes a library feel effortless later.

Tagging is a deep enough topic to earn its own guide, and once files start piling up you'll want a sane structure around them, but "correct tags, embedded art, one consistent scheme, at rip time" covers most of what matters.

The realistic campaign

A secure rip takes real time, often ten to twenty minutes per disc, longer for the scratched ones. Don't plan a heroic weekend; plan a habit. A few discs each evening while you're doing something else turns even a large shelf into a finished archive within a couple of months, with none of the burnout that makes people quit at the letter D. Budget roughly 300–400 MB per album and even a thousand-disc collection fits comfortably on one inexpensive drive, ideally two, but backup is its own sermon.

And the payoff arrives immediately, not just at the end. Every disc you finish is done forever: verified perfect, properly tagged, playable anywhere. Open the player, drag in tonight's freshly ripped album, and enjoy the small ceremony of hearing it, your copy, your file, decoded right in the browser with nothing uploaded anywhere.

That shelf stopped being obsolete the day you decided to rip it properly. It's the lossless edition of your collection; it was just waiting in the wrong format.
