Few arguments in music are as long-running or as unproductive. One side insists vinyl is "warmer" and "more real"; the other points at a graph and calls it nostalgia. Both sides are half right, and the interesting part is which half. The answer requires separating two things that get hopelessly tangled: the format, meaning what a groove can physically store, and the master, meaning what somebody decided to put in it.
Start with the physics, because it isn't controversial. A vinyl record stores sound as a wiggle in a plastic groove, read by a diamond dragged through it. That's astonishing engineering and it has hard limits:
The RIAA equalization curve, which cuts bass and boosts treble on the way in and reverses it on the way out, is another layer of engineering compromise baked into every record. None of this is a knock on vinyl. It's simply what the medium is. On every measurable axis of accuracy, a 16-bit/44.1 kHz digital file exceeds it, usually by a wide margin, and the numbers behind that aren't in dispute.
As a way of storing sound, the record is worse in every measurable way. As a way of delivering music, it is very often better. Both are true, and the reason is the master.
Here's the part the graph doesn't show. Since the mid-1990s, a great deal of popular music has been mastered for loudness: dynamics compressed and limited until the waveform is a solid block, because loud wins on radio and in playlists. It's the loudness war, and it's done more damage to the sound of recorded music than any format ever did.
Vinyl is largely immune, not by virtue but by physics. A crushed, brick-walled master cut directly to lacquer produces a groove the stylus can't track: the needle skips, the sibilance tears, the cutting engineer sends it back. So vinyl gets its own master, typically with more dynamic range, a gentler top end, and less limiting, because the format demands it. The digital release of the same album often gets the loud version.
When someone says the LP "sounds more alive" than the CD, they're frequently right, and it has nothing to do with grooves being more natural than numbers. They're hearing a better master through a worse medium, and the better master wins. Put that vinyl master on a FLAC and it would sound better still: same dynamics, none of the noise.
Two further real effects, both honest:
Most records pressed today are cut from a digital file. The studio delivers a 24-bit master, the cutting engineer plays it into the lathe, and the "analog" record you buy is that digital file passed through a mechanical distortion stage. If the master was the loud one, the record is a worse copy of the loud master. If it was a dedicated vinyl master, the record may sound lovely, and a needle drop of it might be the best-sounding version of that album you can own.
So "vinyl vs digital" was never really the question. The question is which master, and the format is mostly a clue.
Some practical conclusions for someone who cares about how music sounds and wants to own it:
Does vinyl sound better? Not as a format. Sometimes as a product. A great pressing of a thoughtfully mastered album is a genuinely superior listening experience to a loud, lifeless CD of the same record, and no graph changes that. But the superiority lives in the mastering choices and the attention you bring, and both of those can be captured, kept, and played back from a digital file with no surface noise and no wear.
The best of both worlds isn't a compromise. It's a good record, ripped once, played forever.
