Somewhere on a forum right now, two people are having the FLAC vs MP3 argument. One insists MP3 sounds like music heard through a wet sock. The other insists nobody has ever passed a blind test and the whole lossless thing is audiophile theatre. They've been at it for twenty years, and they're both wrong in interesting ways.
Here's the honest version: what the difference actually is, when you can genuinely hear it, when you almost certainly can't, and why the answer to "should I keep FLAC?" doesn't really depend on your ears at all.
The technical distinction is simple. FLAC is lossless: it compresses audio the way a ZIP compresses a document, and decoding it gives you back the original recording bit-for-bit. MP3 is lossy: it shrinks files by permanently deleting the parts of the audio a psychoacoustic model predicts you won't notice, quiet details masked by louder ones, mostly. So the FLAC is a perfect copy, and the MP3 is a very educated guess at what you'd miss least. The real question is whether the guess is good enough to fool you. And the annoying, truthful answer is: it depends on the bitrate, the music, your gear, and your ears, roughly in that order.
"MP3" isn't one sound quality. A 128 kbps MP3 and a 320 kbps MP3 are wildly different animals.

There are exceptions: so-called killer samples. Certain sounds are hostile to lossy encoding: harpsichord, castanets, sharp isolated transients, dense cymbal work, applause. On these, trained listeners can sometimes pick out even a high-bitrate MP3, often via pre-echo, a faint smear of energy arriving just before a sharp attack. But note the qualifiers: certain sounds, trained listeners, sometimes. This is edge-case territory, not your average Tuesday listening.
Here's the uncomfortable part for the wet-sock camp. When you know which file is the FLAC, you will hear it sounding better. Expectation bias isn't a character flaw; it's how human perception works. Sighted listening is worthless as evidence, no matter how golden your ears.
The fix is an ABX test: software plays you sample A (say, the FLAC), sample B (the MP3), then X (one of the two, chosen at random) and you identify which X is. Repeat enough trials and statistics tell you whether you're actually hearing a difference or coin-flipping. The foobar2000 ABX plugin is the classic tool, and there are browser-based tests too.
Two rules if you try it, and you should (it's genuinely humbling):
Most people who do this honestly discover they can spot 128 kbps easily, catch 192 sometimes, and cannot reliably tell 320 kbps from lossless at all. If that's you, congratulations: you have normal, healthy human ears, and no one gets to charge you for an upgrade.
If a good MP3 is transparent, isn't FLAC pointless? No, and this is where the coin-flip camp gets it wrong. The case for FLAC was never really about what you can hear today. It's about what you're allowed to do tomorrow.
Lossy is a one-way door. Once audio has been through an MP3 encoder, the discarded information is gone forever. You can't un-delete it, and every format conversion from that point starts from the degraded copy. Transcode an MP3 to AAC for a new device and the artifacts compound: each lossy encoder deletes a different set of "inaudible" details, and the stack of deletions eventually becomes very audible. FLAC has no such problem: you can convert it to any format, at any bitrate, forever, always starting from the pristine original. Storage stopped being an argument. MP3's entire reason to exist was that space was precious. A FLAC album runs maybe 300–400 MB; a terabyte drive holds thousands of them and costs less than a concert ticket. Accepting permanent data loss to save space that costs almost nothing is a trade from 2003.
The archive outlives the codec. MP3 was the format of one era; AAC and Opus took over the next; something better will follow. If your master copies are FLAC, you re-encode for whatever comes and lose nothing. If your masters are MP3, your collection is frozen at the quality (and the flaws) of a decades-old encoder.
Keep FLAC as the archive. Make lossy copies from it whenever they're convenient. Never the other way around.
One more honest note: a FLAC and a 320 kbps MP3 of the same master will sound the same to almost everyone, but files from different sources often aren't the same master. Sometimes the lossless version you buy is a better, more dynamic master than the old rip you're comparing against, and that difference is easily audible. It's the mastering, not the codec. Can you hear the difference between FLAC and MP3? At low bitrates: probably yes. At high bitrates: almost certainly not, outside a few pathological samples and a proper ABX setup. Anyone who tells you 320 kbps MP3 sounds obviously worse is describing their expectations, not the audio.
And yet keeping FLAC is still the right call, not because of a difference you'll hear on your commute, but because it's the copy that never closes a door. Perfect source, free future conversions, no generational rot, no nagging doubt.
